The University of Chicago: Biological Sciences Division: Department of Neurology

The University of Chicago’s Department of Neurology seeks a full-time faculty member at any rank to join the Healthy Aging & Alzheimer’s Research Care (HAARC) Center. The HAARC Center seeks to serve as an aging, Alzheimer’s disease, and related dementia (ADRD) research hub dedicated to the discovery of neurobiologic, cognitive, genetic, lifestyle, psychosocial, and related factors that promote resilience, resistance, and health span. The Center plans to achieve these goals through multidisciplinary research, community engagement, education, and the development of new evidence-based interventions.

The appointee will be expected to develop and conduct highly impactful research that integrates with and contributes to the multidisciplinary research and educational goals of the HAARC Center and the department. The appointee will be responsible for contributing their skills, expertise, and effort as a key contributor, typically as co-investigator, but potentially as a Principal Investigator, in obtaining, sustaining, and implementing programmatic research at the HAARC Center.

The appointee’s research may overlap with and enhance one or more areas of strength within the Biological Sciences Division (BSD) including neurobiology, computational neuroscience, genetics, neuroimaging, and immunology. As such, the appointee may collaborate closely with the University of Chicago Medicine Center for Comprehensive Care and Research on Memory Disorders, the Neuroscience Institute, the Institute for Population and Precision Health, the Aging and Research Program within the Section of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine, the Center for Neurocognitive Outcomes Improvement Research, the Department of Pscyhiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience, and numerous other programs, centers, institutes, and departments. Other activities of this position may include teaching at the graduate and/or undergraduate level, supervision of students and trainees, and clinical care, where appropriate.

Academic rank and compensation (including a generous package of fringe benefits) are dependent upon qualifications. The primary faculty appointment will be in the Department of Neurology’s HAARC Center with an opportunity for secondary appointments in departments throughout the BSD dependent upon interests and qualifications.

Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must: 1) hold a Ph.D., M.D., M.D.-Ph.D., or equivalent degree(s), in a related field (e.g., Neurology, Neuropsychology, Neuroscience), 2) hold or be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Illinois, if applicable, and 3) be Board certified or eligible in Neurology, Neuropsychology, or related field, if applicable.

We welcome candidates with research interests that align with our mission including topics and methods such as digital biomarkers, blood-based biomarkers, imaging biomarkers (MRI, PET), large-dataset curation, social determinants of health, assessment of cognition, memory, psychosocial wellbeing, functional outcomes, neuropathologic, nonpharmacologic interventions, and implementation science. Neurobehavioral Clinical Faculty #NEU032

The Center for Comprehensive Care and Research on Memory Disorders (The Memory Center) in the Department of Neurology at the University of Chicago seeks full-time behavioral neurologists at any rank to join our growing team. The appointees will join a multidisciplinary team represented by neurology, psychiatry, geriatrics, nursing, and social work. The primary role for the appointee will be to establish a strong clinical presence and to develop or extend a focus of scholarship. Teaching of medical students, residents, and fellows will be expected, as will participation in clinical trials related to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. This position may require some ambulatory practice at UChicago Medicine offsite practices. Academic rank and compensation (including a generous package of fringe benefits) are dependent upon qualifications.

Neuroimmunology Tenured Professor #NEU046

The University of Chicago: Biological Sciences Division: Department of Neurology

The University of Chicago’s Department of Neurology in the Biological Sciences Division (BSD), in collaboration with the Grossman Institute for Neuroscience, Quantitative Biology and Human Behavior, is searching for a tenured professor, either a physician scientist or a basic scientist, to hold its Goldberg Professorship. The appointee shall be someone who, in the opinion of the Dean of the Biological Sciences Division and the Chairman of the Department of Neurology, has made and will continue to make significant contributions toward the development of treatments and potential cures for multiple sclerosis (MS) and/or other neuroimmunological disorders.

The appointee will also help to lead the creation of the University of Chicago Program in Neuroinflammation, capitalizing on the intersection of several existing programs in the BSD and throughout the University. These include the Center for Motor Neuron Disease, the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, and the Committee on Immunology, to name a few. We expect the appointee to facilitate collaborations within the Departments of Neurology, and Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, and with faculty throughout the Neuroscience Institute. Speech-Language Pathologist, Clinical Research

The Communication Bridge Research Program at the Healthy Aging & Alzheimer’s Research Care (HAARC) Center, is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) to join our groundbreaking intervention study. This position will play a pivotal role in screening, delivering the core speech-language therapy (SLT) component of the Communication Bridge intervention, or in assessing outcomes for our new randomized controlled trial (RCT) launching in 2024. The Communication Bridge intervention aims to maximize communication participation and quality of life for people with PPA and their partners.

This unique opportunity invites applicants interested in advancing their knowledge of interventions for individuals with neurodegenerative diseases and delivering interventions to this population through a clinical trial. The successful candidate will play a principal role in screening, delivering the interventions to participants enrolled into the PPA Clinical Trial, or assessing outcomes while maintaining regulatory compliance with the designated protocol. This is a full-time benefit eligible position.

Additional interactions (e.g., community outreach and education) related to the research project may also be involved depending on the qualifications of the applicant. Additional responsibilities may include the organization and analysis of data, mentoring of other team members and trainees, establishing interactions with extramural collaborators and other research-related activities. Flexible schedule may be required to meet the intervention session requirements.

As part of the HAARC Center, you’ll be immersed in a collaborative and dynamic research environment dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by Alzheimer’s and related dementias. Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive speech-language evaluations for participants with PPA.
  • Implement the assigned intervention protocol (Control or Experimental arm) with fidelity, utilizing evidence-based SLP approaches within a dyadic framework.
  • Facilitate individual and dyadic intervention sessions through HIPAA-compliant videoconferencing.
  • Solves complex problems relating to data management and the analysis of large administrative datasets. Works independently to develop, manage, and report on key data and ensures timeliness of data and reporting submissions from multiple investigators.
  • Acts as a resource on the basics of clinical research and related aspects of clinical study for colleagues with less experience. Prepares and evaluates writing protocols, IRB submissions, grant applications, manuscripts, reports, and dissemination tools.

Data Analyst

The Healthy Aging & Alzheimer’s Research Care (HAARC) Center is seeking a Data Analyst to support data management across research projects. The University of Chicago Healthy Aging & Alzheimer’s Research Care (HAARC) Center seeks to serve as an aging and dementia research hub dedicated to the discovery of factors that promote resilience, resistance, and increased healthspan through multidisciplinary research, community engagement, education, and the development of new evidence-based interventions. As part of the HAARC Center, you’ll be immersed in a collaborative and dynamic research environment dedicated to filling critical scientific knowledge gaps related to healthy aging, Alzheimer’s, and related dementias. Studies include the international SuperAging Research Initiative and Communication Bridge, a non-pharmacologic clinical trial delivered via telehealth (video chat) with global enrollment.

Responsibilities

  • Engage with team members to analyze complex data sets, and support in addressing research data science needs effectively, emphasizing knowledge exchange and collaboration.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining data infrastructure, facilitating efficient management of multiple complex datasets.
  • Contribute to process improvements for data calibration and assist in implementing operational protocols for effective data collection and analysis.
  • Participate in the design and evaluation of statistical models and data processing pipelines, ensuring reproducibility and accuracy.
  • Support high-level or complex data-related requests, liaising with other IT resources as required.
  • Analyzes moderately complex data sets for the purpose of extracting and purposefully using applicable information.
  • Provides professional support to staff or faculty members in defining the project and applying principals of data science in manipulation, statistical applications, programming, analysis and modeling.

Clinical Research Coordinator 2

This Clinical Research Coordinator 2 (CRC2) provides support to the SuperAging Research Initiative at the Healthy Aging & Alzheimer’s Research Care (HAARC) Center within the Biological Sciences Division. The SuperAging Research Program is focused on identifying protective factors that contribute to the preservation of memory and healthspan. For this study we recruit and longitudinally follow cognitively average older adults and SuperAgers who, by our definition, are adults over age 80 who have the memory capacity of individuals decades younger. The Clinical Research Coordinator predominately functions as a key coordinating lead for the local University of Chicago SuperAging site activities related to data collection, participant visits and coordinates daily clinical research activities.

Primary responsibilities include coordination of data collection efforts, including scheduling participant visits, completing participant visits and associated tasks, including data entry and neuropsychological test administration and scoring, tracking enrollment and follow-up visit data and reporting out to Principal Investigator and Project Manager and training Research Assistants in the neuropsychological testing battery. The CRC2, acts as the primary contact for research assistants and volunteers in their data collection efforts, assisting with grants and administrative procedures as needed, monitoring data collection aspects of the protocol for compliance, implementing protocol updates and changes, and supporting collaborative efforts.

Our Center uses a community-engaged research approach, which actively involves members of the community in the research process. This position will have the opportunity to work closely with the Director of Community Engagement to support engagement, recruitment, and retention to elevate the scientifically rigorous and socially relevant research we conduct.
